PRK Eye Surgery
Before LASIK laser eye surgery, the PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) treatment was invented. Our doctors use a laser to reshape the cornea in PRK, much as they do in LASIK, but PRK is an ablation method, meaning the laser is used to remove tissue from the cornea's outer surface.
A part of the cornea is taken away from the eye and the tissue beneath it is changed during the LASIK treatment. Healing is substantially faster following LASIK because the unmodified corneal tissue is restored over the changed cornea (serving as a natural bandage). In other instances, though, PRK is more effective.
