Smile Lasik
The newest kind of laser vision correction is Smile Lasik, also known as ReLex Smile. Small Incision Lenticule Extraction, or Smile, is a painless laser procedure that takes less than 30 seconds. You may stand up from the treatment and experience an immediate improvement, as with all forms of laser vision correction, though final eyesight takes around three months (as with all types of laser vision correction). Smile treatments have been conducted in over 5 million locations throughout the world.

The VisuMax laser, developed by Zeiss, is used to conduct Smile Lasik. The laser technology used by VisuMax is simply incredible. Every second, the laser generates 500,000 small dots. These areas are close together, allowing a thin layer (similar to a contact lens) to form within the cornea's core. A tiny tunnel is also created by the laser, which connects the thin layer to the exterior of the eye. The doctor then reaches into the tube, frees the thin lens, and removes it. The removal of this thin lens alters the curvature of the eye, allowing the eyesight to be corrected.
Smile Lasik is only possible with the Zeiss VisuMax laser. This technique can only be performed with the accuracy provided by this laser. The VisuMax laser is used by our doctors not only for Smile, but also for the first phase of the all-laser Lasik treatment. Treatment with this laser is painless since it applies very little pressure to the eye. (For our engineer friends, the VisuMax laser is the only opto-electronic femtosecond laser on the market; all other femtosecond lasers are opto-mechanical.)
Advantages:
Smile Lasik does not have a flap. Because the procedure is carried out entirely within the cornea, there is no need for a flap. There is no need for patients to be concerned about a flap that may be relocated or disturbed in the future. During the first few days following the treatment, you do not need to wear goggles to safeguard your eyes.
With Smile Lasik, there is a bit less short-term dryness. Because there is no flap, fewer corneal nerves are damaged, resulting in reduced dryness in the near term. As a result, you'll need to apply less moisturizing drops during the first few days after the surgery.
Disadvantages:
Enhancement (fine-tuning procedure) of Smile Lasik cannot be performed with Smile, but must be performed with Lasik laser treatment. Enhancements are performed in about 4% of patients.
